For Leeds Learning Disability Week 2026 (15th-19th June), we went to quite a few events. One of them was Picnic in the Park, organised by Aspire CBS! Our Project Worker Oliver Heap wrote all about what happened in this blog post.

What was Picnic in the Park? It was an event for people, companies and organisations to come together to celebrate, raise awareness and promote inclusion for people with learning disabilities.

People with learning disabilities and organisations came together for a picnic in Temple Newsam Park to mark Learning Disability Week. With picnic blankets and packed lunches, as well as stalls that you could look around. There was even a stand where you could make your own smoothie, using bike power.

There was plenty of conversation and smiles. It was a chance to enjoy time outdoors and celebrate inclusion at one of the best green spaces in Leeds. There was also a stage area with music too!

Being seen, heard and valued

The theme of this year's Learning Disability Week is, "Do you see me?". It is all about the people who have a learning disability being recognised, listened to and valued. The picnic was the best way to end off the week, bringing that powerful message to life. It gave an opportunity for people to chat, share their stories and take part in the day. It was also an opportunity to make them feel like they were part of the community!

A relaxed day in a beautiful setting

Temple Newsam was a perfect location for the picnic. We were situated in an area behind the house, with it acting as the backdrop. It felt like an amazing space to be in on the hot day! For many, the picnic was not just about eating food; it was about, having fun, going around the stalls, having confidence and feeling welcome.

Highlights from the day

  • Spending time together in a friendly and relaxed environment
  • Celebrating the everything about people who have a learning disability
  • Enjoying the outdoors, having a picnic, running a stall
  • Showing off what we offer at our stall by explaining the opportunities we offer for people with Learning Disabilities!

Why days like this matter

Events like this help show that not everyone is the same. They remind us that connections are built through small moments of saying hello to each other, sharing lunch together, and making sure everyone has the chance to join in and have fun.
