People with learning disabilities took over Leeds City Council’s Civic Hall for the day on Tuesday 16th June 2026.
This was a chance to speak to councillors and council staff about the things that are important to them.
People asked questions about things that are important to them.
The main themes were:
- Employment such as finding accessible jobs, more long-term jobs and getting the right support to find and keep work.
- Health asking for better access to health services, seeing the same doctor and discussing a health check day for men and women with learning disabilities.
- Transport with questions asked about making buses easier to use, disability awareness training for drivers, disability bus passes and making sure bus information screens work.
- Safety was covered in lots of areas, helping people feel safer, especially at bus stations at night.
- Being social questions around making it easier to spend time with friends, making support more flexible so people can go out when they want and discussing worries about the cost of support and social activities.

The Council Chambers Takeover is an important way for people with learning disabilities to have their voices heard.
By asking questions and sharing ideas, people can help shape services and make Leeds a better place for everyone.
