This month, we have some exciting news! We will be starting our brand-new Motability Project.
The project will be called “Travelling with Confidence”, a three-year project that has been funded by the Motability Foundation. They are a fantastic organisation that fund, support, research and innovate to help all disabled people make the journeys they choose. We are thankful for the opportunity given to us to fulfil this work.
Asking You! have recruited two new members of staff. They have been inducted and are taking on creating and setting up this project to launch in the summer!
The aim of the Motability Project at Asking You! is to support people with learning disabilities to travel independently and access community activities in the Leeds area. The service will be highly led by people with learning disabilities, who will be recruited as project workers and act as peers to the clients, being a role model for them.
Supporting people
We aim to support 240 individuals over the project, through a variety of different methods:
- One-to-one travel companion journeys led by trained people with learning disabilities. These will be one-off journeys to support the client to learn a new route, such as getting the bus from home to a new social group or workplace and back home again. We can assess your journey and work on what areas you are finding harder to build skills to become more confident to travel independently.
- One-to-one travel training and mentorship, led by trained people with learning disabilities, with support of the coordinator. Alongside the companion journeys, having time and focus on specific areas of travel that can be worked on to improve independence and confidence, such as tailored support to look at different routes from your home, or how to use tools and resources like apps and travel passes.
- Group travel training workshops led by trained people with learning disabilities. These will be focused on specific topics such as staying safe while travelling or using mobile apps. We will have advanced sessions in the future to further work on developed skills. Some sessions will also be repeated for those that missed them.
- Peer-Support travel group for people who have used one of our Motability services. These will begin later in the first year, heading into year two.
Launching
We look forward to launching the Motability Project shortly and can’t wait to start making a difference with and alongside the people we support. This is just the beginning of what promises to be a meaningful and empowering journey for everyone involved.
As the project develops, we will be sharing updates, stories, and ways you can get involved – whether you are someone who would like to use the service, know someone who might benefit, or are just interested in following along.
Be sure to keep an eye on our website and social media for more news as we get closer to our official launch. We are so excited for what’s to come, and we would love you to be part of it.
Together, we can help more people travel with confidence.
